Holistic or community-oriented defense is a comprehensive and client-centered model for providing public defense. Drawing on different disciplines, holistic defense is about addressing the root causes that are driving poor people into the criminal justice system. Beyond defending clients in the courtroom, community-oriented defenders help provide pre-arrest services, access to community-based treatment programs, social work, and community advocacy.
